Significant New Google Announcements for Educators
Google's Latest Updates: New Products and Feature Enhancements (Late April to Early May 2025)
The past two weeks have seen Google roll out an impressive array of product updates and feature enhancements across its ecosystem. From multilingual capabilities in NotebookLM to expanded Gemini access for younger users, these updates reflect Google's ongoing commitment to improving accessibility, functionality, and user experience. This report provides a comprehensive overview of Google's most recent innovations and developments that are focused on education.
NotebookLM's Multilingual Revolution
One of the most significant developments is NotebookLM's expanded language support. As of April 29, 2025, Google has made Audio Overviews available in more than 50 languages, including Afrikaans, Hindi, Turkish, and numerous others. This feature transforms users' sources into engaging, podcast-like conversations in their preferred language, breaking down linguistic barriers and making information more accessible globally.
The update introduces a new "Output Language" option in NotebookLM's settings, allowing users to generate audio and chat responses in their selected language. This flexibility enables the creation of multilingual content and study materials with remarkable ease. For instance, educators can now share resources in various languages-such as Portuguese documentaries, Spanish research papers, and English study reports-and students can generate Audio Overviews of key insights in their preferred language.
Taking this multilingual capability even further, on May 3, 2025, Google quietly introduced an even more powerful language feature to NotebookLM that allows users to upload English sources and have everything automatically translated without any manual effort. This functionality opens up incredible productivity opportunities, from global market research to multilingual onboarding.

NotebookLM's Source Discovery Enhancement
Earlier in April, Google introduced a new "Discover sources" feature to NotebookLM. This functionality allows users to describe a topic of interest, and NotebookLM will curate relevant sources from the web. The system gathers hundreds of potential web sources, analyzes them, and recommends the most relevant ones, each with an annotated summary explaining its relevance to the user's topic. Sources can be imported with one click and seamlessly integrated with other NotebookLM features like Briefing Docs, FAQs, and Audio Overviews.
Expanded Gemini Access for Younger Users
In a move that reflects Google's effort to make AI more accessible to younger users, the company announced that beginning next week, children under the age of 13 who have parent-managed Google accounts will be able to access its Gemini chatbot. This service will be available specifically to minors whose guardians utilize Family Link, Google's service that allows families to select various Google services for their children.
Google has emphasized that this version of Gemini includes specific protections designed for younger users, and the company has committed not to use data from these interactions to train or enhance its AI models. This expansion follows Google's earlier initiative from November 2024 that made Gemini available to teenagers aged 13 and older with special safeguards in place.
