Pioneers of Change: Higher Education’s Ethical Mandate in the AI Era

As the world hurtles into an AI-driven future, universities stand at a crossroads. They must recognize their ethical obligation to move beyond discussion of the ethical responsibility of students and toward their own responsibility for preparing them for a transformed world. Institutions that lead this shift will shine as beacons; those that hesitate may slip into history.
By becoming pioneers of change, universities can also lead the reimagining of education, equipping students with agency, including adaptability, resilience, and creativity. This leadership by universities will not only inspire their students but will also create a spark for K-12 institutions that want to prepare their students for university success, ensuring a cohesive evolution in education.
In this essay, I’ll make the case for significant change. ,I open with a frank assessment of AI’s accelerating impact on higher education and student prospects. From there, I posit that universities bear a professional and ethical obligation to lead, replacing rule-enforcement mindsets with curriculum revolutions. Concrete case studies—covering translation technology, generative design, and more—illustrate the upgrades required. I follow with a competency framework that equips undergraduates to decode and leverage AI systems. The conclusion sketches how such leadership can forge an unbroken pathway from secondary school to university, ensuring graduates don’t just adapt to the AI economy—they help set its standards.
The AI-Induced Change and Job Realities for Students
A transformation is underway—faster and deeper than most universities are prepared for.
Over barely half a year the frontier of AI has lurched forward in almost monthly pulses. OpenAI kicked the cycle off by announcing that GPT-4 would leave ChatGPT, handing the keys to GPT-4o, a natively multimodal model that beats its predecessor in writing, coding and STEM. Two weeks earlier it had already previewed a GPT-4.1 “family” (full, mini and nano builds) tuned for agent-style software engineering, signalling a shift from annual jumps to rapid point releases.
Google DeepMind followed with Gemini 2.5 Pro and then 2.5 Flash on 17 April; both variants add a one-million-token context and insert an explicit “think-then-answer” planning phase that vaulted them to the top of the reasoning charts.
Meta, meanwhile, took the open-source crown by making Llama 4 generally available as a managed endpoint on Vertex AI, and Anthropic pushed Claude Sonnet’s score on the SWE-bench Verified coding benchmark from 33 % to 49 % without extra latency. The cadence that once took years has been compressed into about 180 day window.
And progress is no longer confined to chat bots. Figure AI introduced Helix, a vision-language-action model that lets its Figure 02 humanoid follow open-ended voice commands, pick up thousands of unseen household objects and perform continuous upper-body manipulation. Demonstrations in February showed the robot responding to natural-language requests in real time, and Bloomberg reports that UPS is now in talks for a logistics pilot, hinting that humanoids could move from lab demos to revenue footprints before year’s end.
In a recent interview on the Dwarkesh podcast, Mark Zuckerberg shared his expansive vision for how AI will become omnipresent in our daily lives, particularly through wearable technology and holographic interfaces that will fundamentally change how we interact with digital content.
Central to Zuckerberg's vision is the role of smart glasses as the primary interface between humans and AI:
"Eventually, I think we'll walk through our daily lives and have glasses or other kinds of AI devices and just seamlessly interact with it all."
Meta is already making progress in this direction:
Their AI-powered Ray-Ban smart glasses have received positive market response
They're developing more advanced Orion augmented-reality glasses that will display digital content while users view the physical world around them.
Zuckerberg highlighted how AI is becoming increasingly personalized, with Meta AI now reaching almost a billion monthly users. He explained the growing personalization loop:
"I think this is going to be a really big year for all of this, especially once you get the personalization loop going, which we're just starting to build in now really, from both the context that all the algorithms have about what you're interested in - feed, your profile information, your social graph information - but also what you're interacting with the AI about.”
The Evolution From Screens to Holograms
Because capability is compounding on multiple fronts, leading voices have pulled their AGI timelines sharply forward. Google DeepMind’s Demis Hassabis now speaks of a five-to-ten-year horizon; OpenAI’s Sam Altman goes further, saying “AI agents will join the workforce” in 2025; and Anthropic’s Dario Amodei sketches human-level versatility around 2026. Crowd forecasts track the mood: Metaculus places the median date for a publicly known “weak AGI” in mid-April 2026, with a 75 % probability by 2029.
But we don’t need AGI, or even additional advances in narrow AI, to impact our graduates employment prospects. AI isn’t just changing how people work. It’s redefining who gets to work, what skills matter, and what kind of education prepares you for anything at all.
As Derek Thompson writes in The Atlantic, the job market for recent college graduates is flashing red. Unemployment among young, educated workers is rising. Elite M.B.A. holders can’t find jobs.
Even the traditional “safe havens” like law school are being overwhelmed as students scramble to bunker down, reminiscent of the Great Recession. It’s not just a blip—it’s structural.
Why? Because AI has already reached the entry level positions.
Tasks that were once the domain of junior analysts, paralegals, or financial associates—reading, synthesizing, drafting reports—are now easily performed by GPT-powered copilots. As Segato puts it, “three years ago AI could autocomplete code. Today it builds end-to-end software products.” We are watching the traditional ladder to middle-class success—do well in school, get a degree, work your way up—begin to collapse at the bottom.
Companies simply don’t need as many employees as they previously did.
If our curricula remained focused on teaching students basic content and skills they need for entry level jobs rather than on developing their agency, we will do them a disservice.
Universities Ethical Obligations
Adapting to this rate of change in a way that empowers students iis an ethical call to universities. Universities must shift their focus away from policing students using AI, often accusing the students of being “cheaters” and towards their own ethical obligations to prepare students for this new world. A failure to do so cheats their paying students.
In fall 2025, thousands of students will enroll in universities across the country, and most will likely choose majors in roughly the same proportions they did back in fall 2022—before ChatGPT reached mainstream adoption, before Replit could build entire software platforms in days, and before companies like Duolingo and Shopify started replacing roles with AI systems and requiring any new and existing workers to be well versed in AI.
Institutional inertia comes at a steep cost. When the labor market transforms overnight yet syllabi stay frozen in time, universities end up channeling students into programs disconnected from the economy they will actually enter. That mismatch may keep departmental budgets intact, but it shortchanges learners who trust higher education to ready them for the real world.
Consider coding. In late 2022, programming courses were a near-guaranteed gateway to high-paying tech roles, and most observers assumed demand for human developers would keep climbing. By 2025, however, rapid strides in generative AI mean machines can already automate a large share of routine coding tasks, prompting analysts to forecast a slimmer market for traditional programmers. Coding skills are still valuable—but the mix has changed, favoring AI-assisted engineering, prompt design, and systems thinking over stand-alone syntax mastery. And, honestly, the demand is changing as well.
Yet many universities plan to enroll the same cohort sizes and deliver virtually the same curriculum they offered three years ago to the same number of students. If that complacency persists, graduates will leave campus armed with yesterday’s toolkit for tomorrow’s challenges, and both they and the broader economy will pay the price. Students will feel they’ve been duped.
All Majors are Impacted
Another example of a field undergoing massive transformation is marketing. Universities still offer countless marketing courses and produce thousands of marketing majors each year—but the landscape those students are entering has changed dramatically. Sam Altman and others have suggested that up to 95% of marketing tasks could soon be handled by AI. That doesn't mean there will be no jobs in marketing—it means the nature of the work is shifting. The future will belong not to the junior marketers writing ad copy or managing social media calendars, but to a small number of elite, high-agency professionals who know how to wield AI tools effectively.
So the challenge for universities is twofold: first, to be honest with students that traditional marketing roles are increasingly at risk; and second, to reorient programs toward higher-level skills like consumer psychology, ethical persuasion, brand strategy, and the creative use of AI to drive growth. Universities must prepare marketing students for this shift by focusing more on strategic thinking, data interpretation, and the psychology behind consumer behavior. Instead of just teaching how to create a social media post or run a Google ad, the focus should shift to understanding how to leverage AI tools to analyze market trends, craft high-level strategies, and make data-driven decisions. The focus needs to shift from teaching students to do the marketing themselves to preparing them to lead marketing efforts in an AI-augmented world. And, universities need to be honest with students that the market for those with marketing skills will grow much more difficult.
In political communication, the landscape is shifting dramatically with the advent of AI-driven messaging. Recent studies have shown that AI-generated content can be more persuasive than human-crafted messages in many contexts. This means that the traditional models of how political messages are crafted and disseminated are being upended.
Historically, political communication courses emphasized the human element—how individuals craft and deliver messages, how media channels shape those messages, and how audiences receive them. But now, generative AI can tailor messages with incredible precision, targeting specific demographics and psychographics in ways that humans simply can't match at scale.
This shift means that political communication education must evolve. Students need to understand not only the traditional principles of messaging but also how AI influences and even generates the messages itself. The curriculum should include how to critically evaluate and ethically use AI in political campaigns, understanding the implications of AI-driven persuasion techniques, and ensuring transparency and accountability in digital communication.
For language students who traditionally aimed to become translators or interpreters, the rise of AI-powered translation tools like Google Translate and DeepL poses a significant challenge. These tools are becoming increasingly sophisticated, reducing the demand for human translators in many contexts. While human expertise is still crucial for nuanced or high-stakes translations, the volume of traditional translation work is shrinking. Universities need to prepare language students for a broader set of career opportunities, such as localization, cross-cultural communication, and roles that leverage language skills in conjunction with AI tools.
Similarly, for students in graphic design or digital media, AI tools like DALL-E or Canva's AI-powered design features can create high-quality images and marketing materials at a fraction of the cost and time. This reduces the demand for basic design work and shifts the industry's focus to higher-level creative and strategic roles.
For students majoring in writing, the advent of generative AI tools like GPT-4 and beyond has transformed the landscape. These tools can generate articles, reports, marketing copy, and even creative writing at a speed and scale that was previously unimaginable. While this doesn’t eliminate the need for human writers, it does mean that the demand for basic content creation is likely to decrease.
Universities need to pivot their writing programs to focus on areas where human writers add unique value—such as critical thinking, voice, storytelling, and the ability to craft compelling narratives that resonate on a deeper level. Writing programs should also teach students how to work alongside AI—editing and refining AI-generated drafts, injecting creativity and originality, and ensuring ethical and accurate content. Moreover, writing students should be encouraged to develop skills in content strategy, brand voice development, and specialized writing fields like technical writing, grant writing, and investigative journalism—areas where human insight and expertise are irreplaceable.
In essence, universities must ensure that writing graduates are equipped not just to write, but to lead and innovate in a world where AI handles the routine aspects of content creation.
In short, universities need to prepare students not just to use these tools, but to complement and elevate what AI can do. This will give students the best shot, but schools also have to honest with students about the fact that there may be lower demand for what they are learning.
Helping Students Understand the Bigger Picture
We are living through a transformation as profound as the industrial revolution—but at digital speed. The emergence of AI agents capable of writing code, generating persuasive ad campaigns, analyzing legal documents, composing music, and even diagnosing illnesses is not a distant future—it’s already happening. What’s more, these systems are improving exponentially, reducing the time, cost, and expertise once required to perform tasks that defined entire professions. This isn’t merely about efficiency—it’s about a complete reordering of what it means to be valuable in the economy and society.
AI is poised to bring earth-shattering changes across nearly every domain of human life. In our personal lives,we have AI therapists (currently the #1 use of generative AI) and AI significant others. In the economy, we’re witnessing the collapse of traditional job ladders. Politically, AI could reshape power structures, concentrating influence in the hands of those who control its development or use it most effectively. In culture and communication, AI-generated media is blurring the lines between human and machine expression, raising fundamental questions about authenticity, creativity, and truth. At a societal level, AI challenges the very structure of institutions built on credentials (what universities offer), bureaucracy, and linear progress, replacing them with agile, decentralized networks where a single person with high agency and a laptop can build what once required an entire company. These shifts are not gradual—they’re exponential—and they demand an equally bold response from our educational systems.
In this context, universities have a pivotal role to play. Just as many institutions require core writing or quantitative reasoning courses to ensure all students graduate with foundational competencies, we now need to treat AI literacy as equally essential. This includes understanding how AI works, but more importantly, how it is transforming industries, redistributing power, and raising profound ethical and societal questions that I’ve introduced in many other places.
Agency and Resilience
Most importantly, students are going to need to develop what Segato identifies as agency.
In an AI-powered world, the dividing line is no longer education, specialization, or even skill—it’s initiative. The winners are not the most credentialed, but the most driven. High-agency individuals are launching one-person, multi-million-dollar companies. They’re using tools like Replit or Midjourney to build products, markets, and brands from scratch. They're acting without permission—and often without a team.
This signals a massive shift in how institutions—especially universities—must think about their mission. The question is no longer “How do we teach students what to know?” It’s “How do we equip them to build, adapt, and act in a world where knowledge is instantly available?”
Resilience is crucial because the pace of change will only accelerate, and students must learn to bounce back from setbacks and adapt to new circumstances. A student’s ability to persist through uncertainty is now more valuable than any static technical skill. Courses in literature and film can train this through ambiguity, complexity, and interpretation—skills AI struggles to replicate.
Creativity remains essential, as the most valuable contributions will come from those who can think outside the box and leverage AI to push the boundaries of innovation.
Critical thinking is another non-negotiable skill. As AI tools generate information and solutions, students must be able to critically assess and refine those outputs, ensuring they meet ethical standards and align with human values. Understanding that AI is both a tool and a collaborator means students need to learn how to effectively integrate these technologies into their workflows, leveraging their strengths while compensating for their limitations.
These essential skills shouldn't be afterthoughts; they should be woven into the very fabric of higher education. Courses on resilience, adaptability, creativity, and ethical AI use are not peripheral; they're central to ensuring that students can navigate and shape a world where AI is ubiquitous. By embedding these competencies into the curriculum, universities can ensure that their graduates are not just employable, but truly capable of thriving.
Agency isn’t just a personality trait. It can be cultivated. Project-based learning, entrepreneurship challenges, and real-world simulations can teach students to “just do things” without waiting for permission.
From freshman year, students should learn how to build with AI. Not just prompt engineering, but designing workflows, managing uncertainty, and knowing when to trust or override machine suggestions.

That means adapting curriculum, being honest with students, integrating AI literacy, and integrating agency into the core of what students learn.
Universities At-Risk
This isn’t just about ethical responsibility—it’s about institutional survival. As AI becomes embedded in the workflows students use daily, universities that fail to adapt risk losing their relevance. Professors who ignore AI don’t just risk falling behind—they risk losing credibility in the eyes of students who are already building, writing, and creating with these tools. The institutions that thrive in this new era won’t be the ones that retreat to tradition, but those that lean into change. That means providing robust professional development, yes—but also fostering a cultural shift. Faculty need support, but they also need to be challenged to evolve. The question is no longer whether AI will integrate into academia—it already has. The only question is whether universities will shape that integration, or be shaped by it.
At the same time, the very value proposition of a university degree is under pressure. AI is eroding the premium once placed on narrow specialization and credentials. Students are increasingly asking not, “Where did you go to school?” but “What can you build?” “What problems can you solve?” Universities can no longer rely on prestige alone. They must compete on empowerment—on the ability to equip students with the mindset, skills, and confidence to thrive in a world where AI tools are ubiquitous. If students graduate with a diploma but without agency, adaptability, or fluency in the technologies reshaping their future, they will rightfully wonder what all the time and debt were for.
University Leadership for K-12
Universities taking the lead in adapting curricula to an AI-driven world sets the tone for K-12 education, especially in the upper grades. If universities shift their focus toward skills like critical thinking, creativity, and AI collaboration, high schools will naturally begin to mirror these priorities. This alignment would ensure that students are truly "college and career ready" for a future where AI reshapes the workforce.
For example, if universities emphasize project-based assessments and real-world problem-solving over traditional exams and essays, high schools can start integrating similar approaches. This might mean more interdisciplinary projects that require students to use AI tools to analyze data, create solutions, and present findings in innovative ways.
Another example is shifting the focus from rote memorization to strategic use of information. If universities prioritize teaching students how to leverage AI for information synthesis and decision-making, high schools can introduce curricula that focus on how to ask the right questions, critically evaluate AI-generated insights, and apply knowledge in practical contexts.
Ultimately, the more universities innovate, the more K-12 institutions will follow suit, creating a seamless and future-ready educational pipeline. This ensures that by the time students reach university, they're already equipped with the skills and mindset needed to succeed in an AI-augmented world.
No Excuses
I recognize that this all might be unfair. Universities didn’t ask for the AI revolution, nor did most of society. Faculty didn’t vote for generative models to reshape the labor market, and administrators didn’t plan for a future where the ground shifts faster than governance structures can adapt. But none of that changes the reality: the world is changing—permanently and rapidly—and students are often paying hundreds of thousands of dollars for an education that they trust will prepare them for that future. We have an ethical obligation to face this honestly. That means not pretending the world of 2022 still exists in 2025. It means not clinging to outdated curricula, obsolete assignments, or nostalgic notions of expertise. To continue delivering status quo education while the world transforms around us is no more ethical than a student submitting an AI-written paper and pretending it’s their own thinking. We ask our students to show up, to take ownership, to do the work. We should demand the same of ourselves.
Yes, times are hard in higher education and K-12. Federal funding is under pressure, curriculum innovation is often stifled by political scrutiny and bureaucratic processes, and the looming demographic cliff threatens long-term sustainability. But these headwinds, real as they are, don’t negate the responsibility we have to students—or the stakes of inaction. AI is not a passing trend. It is a foundational shift, one that is already reshaping society, labor, power, and possibility. If we claim that our purpose is to prepare students for the world they’ll enter, then we don’t have the option of standing still. There is no alternative. As for students, they are entering a job market in which degrees are no longer guarantees of employment, often burdened by crushing debt and facing an economy that no longer needs the same kinds of entry-level roles. They are going to have to work their asses off to adapt, and excuses won’t save them. Nor will complaints about have to do some things they won’t get paid for. The same is true for faculty and administrators. The world has changed. We either evolve with it—or we fail the very people who trust us to lead. And, well,we’ll also be out of work.

Not knowing exactly what to do is not an excuse. Universities are filled with some of the most intelligent, educated, and resourceful people in the world—scholars who have built careers on research, innovation, and problem-solving. If anyone has the ability to generalize—to take existing knowledge and apply it to novel, complex, rapidly evolving circumstances (somethign we say AI can’t yet do)—it’s them. The rise of AI demands that we exercise that very capacity. Students, and society at large, are counting on higher education to respond—not with perfection, but with courage, creativity, and effort. Of course we won’t get everything right. But in moments of profound change, what matters most is that we try. To sit back and do nothing simply because the path isn’t clear would be a failure of imagination, leadership, and responsibility.

The presupposition in this piece is that the purpose of higher education is, or ought to be, to prepare students for the job market. It also assumes that university courses ought to be about problem-solving. These assumptions are quite narrow, and especially denigrate the humanities.
It's also troubling given the current oligarchic control of LLMs. In effect, we're being told that universities have an ethical obligation to teach students to involve some billionaire's product in everything they do. Billionaires who, BTW, are tending to support authoritarianism. It seems premature to talk about ethical duties of universities until one confronts the political context of what we're being urged to do.
