The Intro to My Debate and AI Work
Over the past several years, I have become convinced that academic debate is not merely a valuable educational activity—it is essential infrastructure for preparing students to thrive in an AI-transformed world. As artificial intelligence rapidly advances toward systems that may match or exceed human cognitive capabilities across virtually all domains, we face a fundamental question: What skills will humans need when machines can do most cognitive work?
The answer, I believe, lies not in teaching students to use specific AI tools that may be obsolete by graduation, but in developing the distinctively human capacities that debate has cultivated for over a century. The articles collected here represent my attempt to articulate why argumentation should become the “fourth literacy”—as fundamental to AI-era citizenship as reading, writing, and arithmetic were to the industrial age.
Why Debate Training is Critical for the AI World
My work identifies several interconnected reasons why debate becomes increasingly essential as AI capabilities expand:
1. Debate Develops Metacognition
The most critical skills students need to thrive in an AI-driven society are metacognitive: the ability to monitor, evaluate, and regulate one’s own thought processes and learning strategies. Debate demands precisely this—participants must plan and organize their thoughts in structured ways, analyze the validity and soundness of arguments in real-time, manage their emotions and adjust strategies based on the flow of discussion, and continuously reflect on their performance to improve. As AI systems increasingly handle routine cognitive tasks, these higher-order thinking skills—self-awareness, self-regulation, critical evaluation of one’s own reasoning—become what differentiates effective humans from machines that can process but cannot truly reflect. Many schools are turning themselves upside down searching for the best instructional approach for the AI world, but we already have one that has been developing metacognition for over a century.2. Debate Develops Human Judgment
The crisis of the AI age is not that machines become intelligent—it is that human judgment may atrophy while machine output proliferates. In a world where expertise fragments, options explode, tradeoffs accelerate, and persuasion becomes cheap, humans need practice making comparative judgments under genuine uncertainty. Debate forces exactly this: students cannot defer to algorithms but must weigh competing values, navigate complex tradeoffs, and make real-time decisions when they cannot predict what arguments their opponents will present. Unlike most academic settings, debate makes value conflicts explicit and contestable, training students to exercise judgment even in—especially in—unpredictable situations. This is the training ground for resisting what I call “procedural irrelevance”—the deepest risk of superintelligence, where humans remain nominally in charge but functionally just ratify machine outputs.
3. Debate Solves the Instructional Exigence
AI can help a student write a basic speech, but it cannot debate for them—it cannot ask probing questions, answer unexpected challenges in real time, produce high-quality rebuttals on the fly using accumulated knowledge, synthesize arguments within an actual debate, or persuade a live human audience. When students debate live, they are demonstrating skills and knowledge in ways that fundamentally cannot be outsourced to machines. This makes debate one of the few educational activities that remains authentically human performance even as AI capabilities expand dramatically. The assignment structure itself—live, interactive, adversarial—incentivizes genuine thinking rather than AI delegation, solving the “AI cheating” problem that plagues traditional written assessments.
4. Students Can Practice Debate With AI as a Training PartnerRather than viewing AI as a threat to debate education, we should recognize it as a powerful training partner that democratizes access to high-quality preparation. Students can use AI to generate argument ideas, then exercise judgment about which arguments to use and why; they can practice cross-examination with AI systems, prepare responses to counterarguments, and receive instant feedback on their reasoning. This creates a dialogue-based learning environment where AI serves as coach, tutor, peer, and mentor—roles that were previously available only to students at well-resourced schools with experienced coaches. The key insight is that AI becomes additive to debate education rather than a substitute for it: the human student retains full responsibility for the actual debating, while AI helps level the playing field during preparation.
5. Debate Builds Collaborative and Collective IntelligenceThe myth of the solitary genius has dominated our educational system for too long—in reality, all significant human achievements emerge from collaboration, dialogue, and the exchange of ideas. Debate embodies this truth: students work in teams to share research and build on each other’s insights, partners must coordinate in real-time during rounds (covering for weaknesses and amplifying strengths), and cross-examination creates genuine dialogue where understanding is built through questioning. As AI handles more routine cognitive tasks, the distinctively human skills become collaborative problem-solving, building shared understanding through dialogue, navigating disagreement productively, and creating trust across difference. In a world where AI can outperform individuals on most cognitive tasks, our ability to think together—with other humans and with AI systems—becomes our greatest competitive advantage.
6. Debate Trains Adaptation to Unpredictable SituationsWe cannot teach students “the right answers” about artificial general intelligence or workforce automation because nobody knows the answers yet—the future is genuinely uncertain in ways that make specific predictions unreliable. What we can do is help students develop the capacity to encounter genuinely novel situations and reason through them effectively. Debate normalizes intellectual turbulence in ways few other activities can: topics change constantly, new evidence overturns previously settled assumptions, world events shift the ground under ongoing arguments, and students must adapt their strategies round by round. This constant practice with uncertainty and adaptation develops the flexible, resilient thinking skills essential for navigating whatever future actually emerges.
7. Debating About AI Builds AI Literacy at ScaleOne of the simplest and most scalable paths to AI awareness is having students debate AI-related topics—when students prepare for debates on resolutions like “Teachers should integrate generative AI in their teaching and learning,” they naturally research and learn about hallucinations, bias, privacy concerns, regulatory frameworks, the future of work, energy consumption, and dozens of other critical AI issues. This is not a comprehensive AI literacy curriculum, but it provides essential awareness and critical engagement with AI’s implications in ways that passive instruction cannot match. With more than 100,000 student debaters in the United States alone, organizations committed to AI literacy should consider sponsoring AI-focused debate topics as a high-leverage intervention that reaches students who are already motivated to research deeply and think critically.
8. Debate Improves Reading Comprehension and Research SkillsResearch consistently shows that participating in academic debate significantly improves students’ reading comprehension and critical thinking skills—a study of the Boston Debate League found that students on debate teams improved their reading scores by 13% of a standard deviation, equivalent to about two-thirds of a typical year of learning gains. Debate requires students to read and analyze complex texts from multiple perspectives, evaluate evidence quality and source credibility, synthesize information across numerous sources, construct arguments based on their reading, and respond to counterarguments in real-time. As reading skills decline nationally and concerns grow about AI’s impact on student literacy, debate offers a proven, research-backed intervention that makes reading purposeful and engaging rather than passive consumption.
9. Debate Provides Neutral Ground for Examining Controversial Topics
Students deserve to wrestle with the profound questions AI raises: What happens when machines can do most cognitive work? How should societies distribute resources when traditional employment shrinks? What are the ethical implications of artificial superintelligence? But the moment a teacher introduces these topics through direct instruction, they become political lightning rods—a lesson on AI and employment becomes “liberal propaganda about universal basic income.” Debate offers something unusual and valuable: a structure where controversial ideas can be examined rigorously without anyone having to endorse them personally. When a student argues that the U.S. should adopt universal basic income, they’re being assigned a position to defend as an intellectual exercise—not being indoctrinated. This makes debate perhaps the only pedagogically safe space for preparing students to reason about genuinely uncertain and contested futures.
10. Debate Skills Support AI Safety and Alignment ResearchBeyond preparing students for an uncertain future, the skills honed through academic debate are invaluable tools for AI researchers working to ensure that rapidly advancing AI systems remain aligned with human values and do not become existential threats. Constructing well-reasoned arguments and systematically anticipating counterarguments is crucial for identifying potential risks and developing robust solutions before powerful AI systems can veer into misaligned or harmful trajectories. AI safety teams can use structured argumentation and debate methodologies to stress-test their systems and control mechanisms against hypothetical scenarios where an advanced AI might attempt to subvert human oversight or pursue misaligned goals. The collaborative aspects of debate are also vital for bringing together the multidisciplinary expertise—spanning computer science, philosophy, policy, and psychology—needed to holistically understand and manage the profound ethical challenges surrounding transformative AI capabilities.
The Case for Universal Basic Debate
Taken together, these arguments point toward what I call “Universal Basic Debate”—the proposition that every student should have the opportunity to research contested questions, construct arguments, face challenges from peers, and refine their thinking with feedback from experienced adults. Just as we said in 1900 that industrial citizens needed science education beyond basic literacy, we now must recognize that AI-era citizens need argumentation training beyond information and digital literacy alone. Reading, writing, arithmetic—and argumentation: the fourth literacy for the fourth industrial revolution.
The articles that follow explore these themes in depth—from the philosophical foundations of debate in an age of superintelligence, to practical guides for implementing debate in classrooms, to research on the proven benefits of debate participation, to specific frameworks like D.E.B.A.T.E. for structuring AI-era argumentation instruction. My hope is that this collected work can serve as both argument and resource for educators, policymakers, and parents who recognize that the skills debate develops are not extracurricular luxuries but essential preparation for whatever future our students will face.
The singularity is about intelligence scaling beyond human capacity. Debate is about ensuring human judgment scales alongside it. In a world where AI can outperform individuals on most cognitive tasks, our ability to think together—to argue, to question, to refine our collective understanding through structured disagreement—becomes humanity’s greatest advantage.

This is really remarkable, kudos for doing all this.
The trick though is to get kids beyond interacting with AI through typing but to untether from it all and be able to speak and interact. That's debating, and AI can greatly help in doing that, but still once you're untethered from the computer -- and I don't want you just reading what AI wrote -- then you're in the world I think you (and I) want kids to be in
